PAPER

In paper industry, industrial minerals are widely used as pulp and paper modifiers . Amongst the different minerals that can be used in such application, talc play a role of functional filler, intended to improve some specific properties of paper.

Being highly lamellar, hydrophobic, lipophilic, soft and chemically inert, talc can be actively used in paper industry to fulfill different requirements.

Pitch control

In pitch control and as an de-inking agent, IMI Fabi talc grades prevent the organic impurities of the paper pulp and recycled paper from agglomerating. In fact, its high platy and lipophilic structure works to absorb sticky resinous particles avoiding re-agglomeration. Differently from chemicals used for the same application, talc particles remain into the paper without polluting the process water.

Cationic grades are available according to the process specifications where talc is used.

Because of the different mineral composition and specific surface, there are products having peculiar efficiencies, to be selected according to the expected final performances.

Paper coating

When used in paper coating, talc plays different functions. Thanks to its softness and lamellarity, it imparts paper mattness and processability.

Talc reduces ink scuff during printing .

Because of its platyness and hydrophobicity, talc works as barrier for water vapour, for example in paper board for food packaging.

Paper filling

When used as filler in paper, talc reduces the porosity of the paper and increases the smoothness.
